What a Retaining Wall Does for Your Property

Retaining walls are one of the most valuable and most misunderstood parts of desert hardscaping. At their most basic they hold back soil and manage grade, but a well-designed wall does much more: it turns a sloped, unusable yard into flat, functional living space, protects your home and landscaping from erosion, and controls where monsoon water goes. On graded lots across the Valley, the retaining wall is what makes the rest of the outdoor space possible.

Many Phoenix-area properties, especially in the foothills and north Valley, sit on slopes that waste a large part of the lot. By terracing that grade with one or more retaining walls, we create level areas for a patio, a turf lawn, a pool, or a garden, effectively adding usable square footage to your yard. Stepped, terraced walls also add depth and visual interest that a flat yard lacks.

Beyond creating space, retaining walls do critical protective work. They stop soil from washing away during our intense monsoon storms, keep slopes from creeping toward foundations, and, when built correctly, direct water safely around structures. That last point is where engineering matters most: a wall without proper drainage behind it, meaning gravel backfill, filter fabric, and weep holes or drain lines, will eventually fail as water pressure builds.
